Batch and Serial Tracking

Title: Batch and Serial Tracking Inventory

Overview

Batch and Serial tracking an inventory item is the ability to catch a specific attribute of an item during an item transaction. The item transaction could include any of the following transactions:

  • Sale Delivery
  • Sale Invoice
  • Sale Return
  • Sale Credit
  • Purchase Delivery
  • Purchase Invoice
  • Purchase Return
  • Purchase Credit
  • Item Issue
  • Item Receipt
  • Item Adjustment

The could be other transactions. The important thing to take from this list is that any transaction affecting an Item could require the functionality to catch a batch number(s) and/or serial number(s).

The transactions affected are determined by the Item Data Control File. This is where “tracking” batchs and serial numbers differs from an Item that is configured to be a Batch Item or a Serial Item. An item tracked is still treated as a standard consumable item ( it could be a non-stock item), but we have chosen to collect some more data about this items movement (e.g. tracking serial numbers sold), where as a Serial Item DEMANDS to know what serial numbers are involved on ALL transactions. A subtle difference , but most important.

Scenarios

In designing, it helps to imagine a few real life stories of how this feature would work.
